Andy Short

Andy Short performs with The ImprovBoston Family Show. He has a myriad of other pursuits that include teaching children theater, playing "cutesy" video games with his girlfriend, and thinking about starting a business one day. One time he biked across the country for charity -but don't get him started because you won't hear the end of it. This is his attempt at a comedy website bio that is 1 part flippant, 1 part informative, and 1 part humble-braggy. He really hopes he hit a respectable balance and especially that you enjoyed reading it!

Danny Balel

Teaching Style: I believe in organic discovery, emotional commitment, and allowing yourself to be goofy onstage and off. My style reflects these three components. Through side coaching, targeted exercises, and the release of laughter my classes focus on breaking down inhibitions and trusting your instincts. It is my core belief that being silly is as useful as being in control.

Bio: Danny Balel has been teaching and performing for over ten years. He teaches Theater at Clark University, and he has taught in the public schools of Worcester, Boston, Cambridge, and beyond. In addition, Danny teaches at Improv Boston, everything from weekly classes, workshops, to birthday parties. Currently he is a member of Improv Boston's Touring Company and Mainstage. He also directs the Top Shelf team Ghost Light, The Greg Show: A one Man Improvised Extravaganza, and Something Wicked: Improvised Shakespearean Comedy. Danny has performed with Kevin Macdonald and Joe Bill, and has taken workshops with Mike Birbiglia, Liz Allen, and Susan Messing. He believes that improv should be playful, focused, and above all fun. He lives in Davis Square, Somerville, and enjoys candied yams, big dogs, and baking. Danny was also interviewed by Jimmy Carrane for the Improv Nerd podcast (http://jimmycarrane.com/podcasts/122-danny-balel/).

Currently a member of ImprovBoston’s Mainstage, Kristina has over 20 years of experience performing, as well as directing and teaching those of all ability levels. She first joined IB in 2004 as a member of Theatersports and has since then performed with the Touring Company, Mainstage, Face Off and various showcase shows such as Slainte, Girls’ Night Out, LuvBoat, Gorefest and Spice, which she directed and co-produced. As writer and producer, Kristina was a founding member of the Ruckus and Boston News Net. She also has a handful of local commercial and theatrical credits to her name, is a member of the Improv Asylum’s NXT cast, the Majestic Theater’s in-house troupe the Majesters and is pretty handy with a pneumatic nail gun. Kristina has a BA in Theater (and English) and has studied at ImprovBoston, ImprovAsylum, Williamstown Theater Festival, numerous workshops and tends to talk to strangers. You can follow her on Twitter @Smarzipantz, but barely ever tweets so feels a pang of guilt every time she gets a new follower. She likes lots of stuff and is genuinely curious how you’re doing.

Mike Descoteaux

Teaching Style: When I think back to my favorite teachers, both in improv and school, they had the right combination of praise and feedback. Since I teach at levels 201 and 301, there is a mixture of people who are learning improv because it's a fun, social activity and also students who want to make improv a career path. With that combination, I like to let students play as much as possible while still carving out time after games and scenes to talk about what worked and what didn't. My job as your instructor is not to tell you what you did wrong since your art it yours alone to judge. My job is to be your cheerleader, your resource for questions about your improv journey and your teacher who points out ways you can make your life easier on stage. Previous students would likely say I made the class feel fun, close knit, supportive, safe and a good combination of "here's what I loved about that and here's something to think about for next time."

Bio: Mike Descoteaux is the Artistic Director of ImprovBoston and former director of the nationally renown Charles River Creative Arts Program as well as founder of the celebrated Music Program at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Among other notable arts leadership positions, Mike is founder and director of the critically acclaimed sketch satire, Best Church of God, named “Best Sketch Comedy in Chicago” several years running. In various capacities, Mike has collaborated with Tony, Emmy and Oscar-award winning artists and, with equal passion, students and emerging artists of all ages. A smattering of the artists Mike has had the privilege to work alongside include Stephen Colbert, Martin Short, Keegan Michael-Key, Richard Kind, Rachel Dratch, Brian Gallivan, Nicole Parker, TJ Jagadowki, Scott Adsit, Joe Bill, Dave Razowski, Vanessa Bayer, Mick Napier, Aidy Bryant, Jack McBrayer, Jason Robert Brown, Norbert Leo-Butz, Jackie Hoffman, Jill Bernard, Kevin McDonald and comedy giants like Baby Wants Candy, Improvised Shakespeare, The Annoyance, ComedySportz, iO, and the Magnet. Mike has directed ImprovBoston's National Touring Company, The Family Show, and numerous indie sketch and improv ensembles. Mike has been seen on NBC, CBS, A&E, and WGN. Mike, a Northwestern University grad, has received a Jeff Award, After Dark Award, Paynter Award and was named one of the top young songwriters in the country by the Johnny Mercer/AMTP association. Mike is thrilled to combine his experience in improv, teaching, directing, music and arts management into this one dream position serving this one dream community.

Mike Morrell

Teaching Style: I think it's my job to make you a better improviser. If there are bad habits, let's break them, if there are weak choices, let's strengthen them, if you're doing the same thing all the time, let's play. Ill give you honest feedback that's easy to incorporate, and tell you the things I think you need to hear. I'll push you to be better and if you'd like to grow as an improviser, then I'd love to help. To check out reviews of me, go to TheMikeMorrell.com

Bio: Mike has been acting and doing comedy for 15 yrs. You may have seen him alongside Denzel Washington in the Equalizer or shredding documents in a "what not to do" training video. As for Mike's teaching, he will be honest with you about why scenes are working or not working and help you find new ways to create successful games. When not doing improv, he'll be found playing with dogs or playing with humans or playing with strangers, he loves it, so he's always playing. (Get your mind out of the gutter.)

Kristina Smarz

Teaching Style: My hope is to help every student learn about who they are as an artist of improv. I push my students to take big risks, fail brilliantly, then get back up and go try it again. My class is a place for exploration, not fear. I instruct and side coach in a way that encourages students to internalize the lesson, occasionally getting them to try on a performance style that's initially uncomfortable. Let's find out what works for you and what doesn't by doing it. Discover instead of script. Commit to your emotional and physical choices. Show me what's fun, show me what's possible.

Bio: Greg originally hails from Dallas, Texas where he trained and directed at the Dallas Comedy House. He joined the ImprovBoston community four years ago as part of Harold Night. Since that time Greg has taken on several projects including Magic: The Gathering: The Show, performing with partner Ari Stern in Two Gentlemen, joining as a traveling member of Will Luera's Big Bang, performing with The ImprovBoston National Touring Company, and producing One Man Army which regularly features his solo-improv act The Greg Show. Outside of improv, Greg is a marketing professional and a major geek.
