Mike Morrell

Mike has been performing improv and stand up for the last 10 yrs. He's trained and worked in Boston (I.B/I.A), NYC (The PIT) and L.A. (IOWEST) He's created, directed and starred in shows, his favorite being Crime Solving Bear, which was hailed as, "borderline genius" He's run auditioning workshops with local casting directors. He's very good at finding what doesn't work in a scene and brainstorming options to solve that problem. If you have a problem and no one else can help...maybe you can hire...Mike Morrell.

Andy Short performs with The ImprovBoston Family Show. He has a myriad of other pursuits that include teaching children theater, playing "cutesy" video games with his girlfriend, and thinking about starting a business one day. One time he biked across the country for charity -but don't get him started because you won't hear the end of it. This is his attempt at a comedy website bio that is 1 part flippant, 1 part informative, and 1 part humble-braggy. He really hopes he hit a respectable balance and especially that you enjoyed reading it!

Sara Burns

Sara Burns is a cast member of ImprovBoston's Mainstage and National Touring Company, director of Saturday night's Face Off, and teaches several courses in our Comedy School. She is an alumni of ImprovBoston's Face Off, Harold Night, and Studio 40, and adds many sketch shows, studio runs and national festivals to her credits. Sara is a current cast member of national free-form group Big Bang Improv and IB's Musical Improv Cast, and is a professional stage and screen actor in the Boston area. Her offstage passions include plant life, poetry, and puns.

Elyse has been performing, teaching, and directing at ImprovBoston since 1999. Her favorite projects include: Radio Hour, John Hughes High, UnNatural Selection, and Misunderstood: Improvised Rock Opera. David Marino

David Marino has been performing, writing, directing and coaching improv and scripted theater in the Boston area for over 20 years. In addition to performing with ImprovBoston MainStage for almost a decade, he produced several innovative shows exclusively for the theater including Archipelago, UnNatural Selection, Continuum, Center Mike, Code Duello, the attendance record-breaking Groaners and Boners, Red Alert!, and the award-winning Agent Spy, which was showcased at the 2004 Chicago Improv Festival. He has written and directed a number of plays and musicals throughout the region including the Boston One-Minute Play Festival, Shtick it to Vaudeville, and the critically acclaimed Pirate Lives: The Musical! Specializing in theater-based interpersonal communications David has been coaching industry leaders for over 25 years. Using creative and dynamic presentation techniques from scripted and improvisational theater, he engages with individuals, non-profit and for-profit companies to create inspiring and interactive leadership practices that demonstrate powerful and effective communication strategies. David is the founding director of Groaners for Donors, a performance-based fundraising production company “dedicated to raising money for your nonprofit organization by providing a unique comedy experience. We make the funny, you make the money!”

Bobby Smithney

Mainstage Director and Performer At 6'6" it would be hard to miss Bobby, even if he hadn't been a member of ImprovBoston since 2000. From improvisation to stand-up to scripted work, he can be seen performing comedy of all kinds all over Boston but has focused on directing and instruction. He has been teaching students and rocking corporate trainings on improvisation across all age and ability levels for well over a decade. Bobby is currently the Director of ImprovBoston's Mainstage cast and tours with the critically acclaimed Mama Bear. Danny Balel

Danny Balel has been teaching and performing for over ten years. He teaches Theater at Clark University, where he oversees a Theater Education program in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester. In addition, Danny teaches at Improv Boston, everything from weekly classes, workshops, to birthday parties. Currently he is a member of Improv Boston's Touring Company and All Access, the fast flying show for all ages. Danny is a previous member of Comedy Sportz Boston and Magic the Gathering: the Improvised Show. He produces Cagematch, a weekly competitive show at Improv Boston. He lives in Davis Square, Somerville, and enjoys candied yams and big dogs. Kristina Smarz

Currently a member of ImprovBoston’s Mainstage, Kristina has over 20 years of experience performing, as well as directing and teaching those of all ability levels. She first joined IB in 2004 as a member of Theatersports and has since then performed with the Touring Company, Mainstage, Face Off and various showcase shows such as Slainte, Girls’ Night Out, LuvBoat, Gorefest and Spice, which she directed and co-produced. As writer and producer, Kristina was a founding member of the Ruckus and Boston News Net. She also has a handful of local commercial and theatrical credits to her name, is a member of the Improv Asylum’s NXT cast, the Majestic Theater’s in-house troupe the Majesters and is pretty handy with a pneumatic nail gun. Kristina has a BA in Theater (and English) and has studied at ImprovBoston, ImprovAsylum, Williamstown Theater Festival, numerous workshops and tends to talk to strangers. You can follow her on Twitter @Smarzipantz, but barely ever tweets so feels a pang of guilt every time she gets a new follower. She likes lots of stuff and is genuinely curious how you’re doing.

MB teaches Improv 101 in our Comedy School, she has formerly served as Assistant to the Managing Director, producer of the Comedy Lab and as a cast member of the ImprovBoston Family Show and Touring Company. MB also performs with "Work Lunch" and "We Fancy" locally and at festivals. She has been improvising for 30 years and doing so onstage for 8 of those years. MB wants you to come play!

Mike Descoteaux

Mike Descoteaux is the full time Artistic Director of ImprovBoston and former director of ImprovBoston's National Touring Company and Family Show. For over a decade, Mike has taught, directed, and facilitated workshops in improvisation, sketch, musical improv and comedic songwriting around the world. He created and led the celebrated Music Program at The Second City in Chicago, which includes a 6-term musical improvisation conservatory, songwriting courses, master classes, and over 60 musical workshops per term. In addition, he regularly taught in their improv and writing programs which serve over 2,000 students 6 terms per year. Mike has taught at Columbia College and as a guest artist at Northwestern University. He has created and led workshops for iO (formerly Improv Olypmic), The Chicago Improv Festival, the Magnet Theater, Sarasota Improv Fest, The Chicago Cultural Center, The Colorado Improv Fest, The Playground, Norwegian Cruise Line, Chicago Sketchfest, Northwestern University’s NHSI, and numerous other schools, theatre companies, and corporations. He has taught the creative process and varied applications of improvisation to thousands of kids, teens, and adults across the country, from anti-bullying workshops to creative problem solving intensives with Fortune 500 companies. David Marino

David Marino has been performing, writing, directing and coaching improv and scripted theater in the Boston area for over 20 years. In addition to performing with ImprovBoston MainStage for almost a decade, he produced several innovative shows exclusively for the theater including Archipelago, UnNatural Selection, Continuum, Center Mike, Code Duello, the attendance record-breaking Groaners and Boners, Red Alert!, and the award-winning Agent Spy, which was showcased at the 2004 Chicago Improv Festival. He has written and directed a number of plays and musicals throughout the region including the Boston One-Minute Play Festival, Shtick it to Vaudeville, and the critically acclaimed Pirate Lives: The Musical! Specializing in theater-based interpersonal communications David has been coaching industry leaders for over 25 years. Using creative and dynamic presentation techniques from scripted and improvisational theater, he engages with individuals, non-profit and for-profit companies to create inspiring and interactive leadership practices that demonstrate powerful and effective communication strategies. David is the founding director of Groaners for Donors, a performance-based fundraising production company “dedicated to raising money for your nonprofit organization by providing a unique comedy experience. We make the funny, you make the money!”

Mike Morrell

Mike has been performing improv and stand up for the last 10 yrs. He's trained and worked in Boston (I.B/I.A), NYC (The PIT) and L.A. (IOWEST) He's created, directed and starred in shows, his favorite being Crime Solving Bear, which was hailed as, "borderline genius" He's run auditioning workshops with local casting directors. He's very good at finding what doesn't work in a scene and brainstorming options to solve that problem. If you have a problem and no one else can help...maybe you can hire...Mike Morrell.

Kristina Smarz

Currently a member of ImprovBoston’s Mainstage, Kristina has over 20 years of experience performing, as well as directing and teaching those of all ability levels. She first joined IB in 2004 as a member of Theatersports and has since then performed with the Touring Company, Mainstage, Face Off and various showcase shows such as Slainte, Girls’ Night Out, LuvBoat, Gorefest and Spice, which she directed and co-produced. As writer and producer, Kristina was a founding member of the Ruckus and Boston News Net. She also has a handful of local commercial and theatrical credits to her name, is a member of the Improv Asylum’s NXT cast, the Majestic Theater’s in-house troupe the Majesters and is pretty handy with a pneumatic nail gun. Kristina has a BA in Theater (and English) and has studied at ImprovBoston, ImprovAsylum, Williamstown Theater Festival, numerous workshops and tends to talk to strangers. You can follow her on Twitter @Smarzipantz, but barely ever tweets so feels a pang of guilt every time she gets a new follower. She likes lots of stuff and is genuinely curious how you’re doing.

Danny Balel

Danny Balel has been teaching and performing for over ten years. He teaches Theater at Clark University, where he oversees a Theater Education program in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester. In addition, Danny teaches at Improv Boston, everything from weekly classes, workshops, to birthday parties. Currently he is a member of Improv Boston's Touring Company and All Access, the fast flying show for all ages. Danny is a previous member of Comedy Sportz Boston and Magic the Gathering: the Improvised Show. He produces Cagematch, a weekly competitive show at Improv Boston. He lives in Davis Square, Somerville, and enjoys candied yams and big dogs.
