Mike Descoteaux

Mike Descoteaux is the Artistic Director of ImprovBoston and director of IB TourCo. With The Second City in Chicago, he founded their Music Program, taught in the Training Center, and was music director of the ETC stage. Mike teaches workshops in songwriting, musical improv and music direction at festivals and for clients around the world. He is the founder of the critically acclaimed satire Best Church of God and former director of the celebrated Charles River Creative Arts Program.

Adam Brooks

Adam Brooks has been instructing and accompanying musical improv for over ten years. He has served as music director for Second City Cleveland and ImprovBoston, and has worked with numerous groups from Boston, Cleveland, New York, and Chicago. He performs regularly with many ImprovBoston shows, and has developed many musicals, including the critically acclaimed What The Dickens?!? and An Evening with Ladley & Craig.

Steve Gilbane

STEPHEN GILBANE has been accompanying improv troupes and teaching improvisers to make up songs on the spot since joining ImprovBoston in 1992, when the troupe developed their signature longform improvised musical format. He was artistic director (1999-2005) of Musical Improv Company, an improvisational troupe that specialized in developing and performing full-length improvised musicals, and currently is music director of Hidden Falls, ImprovBoston’s house musical improv cast. He has composed music for nine of ImprovBoston’s annual Halloween scripted musical Gorefest productions, and co-written several short musicals and one full-length show (Showstopper! A High-Tech Musical, based on a startup company in the mid-1980’s). He was composer & co-lyricist for Pirate Lives, a full-length musical involving Noel Coward characters and pirates, that premiered in Boston in 2012.

Musical Improv - Level 301

Prerequisite: MUSICAL IMPROV 201

Musical Improv 201

Musical Improv 201 builds on the basics covered in 101 to explore more advanced concepts such as heightening from scene to song, musical styles and long-form musical structures. We continue to develop rhyme skills and musicianship while focusing closely on the relationship between music and character. Students will discover how to set every song up for improvisational, musical and comedic success. Prerequisite is completion of Musical Improv 101 or permission of the instructor.
