STEPHEN GILBANE has been accompanying improv troupes and teaching improvisers to make up songs on the spot since joining ImprovBoston in 1992, when the troupe developed their signature longform improvised musical format. He was artistic director (1999-2005) of Musical Improv Company, an improvisational troupe that specialized in developing and performing full-length improvised musicals, and currently is music director of Hidden Falls, ImprovBoston’s house musical improv cast. He has composed music for nine of ImprovBoston’s annual Halloween scripted musical Gorefest productions, and co-written several short musicals and one full-length show (Showstopper! A High-Tech Musical, based on a startup company in the mid-1980’s). He was composer & co-lyricist for Pirate Lives, a full-length musical involving Noel Coward characters and pirates, that premiered in Boston in 2012.

Mike Descoteaux

Mike Descoteaux is the full time Artistic Director of ImprovBoston. He is the former executive director of the nationally renowned Charles River Creative Arts Program as well as founder of the celebrated Music Program at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Among other notable arts leadership positions, Mike is the co-creator of the ground-breaking Off-Broadway production BLANK! The Musical, and was the creator/director of the critically acclaimed sketch satire, Best Church of God, named “Best Sketch Comedy in Chicago” several years running. In various capacities, Mike has collaborated with Tony, Emmy and Oscar-award winning artists and, with equal passion, students and emerging artists of all ages. Mike designed the curriculum for ImprovBoston’s now 7-level core improv program, the theater’s Grad School, 3-level Music Improv Program and co-authored IB’s 3-level Sketch program. He created ImprovBoston’s Music Director Training Program (one of only 2 in the country, the other at the Second City whose program he also founded). Mike loves teaching improv, sketch, music improv, comedic songwriting and music direction. He’s taught at iO, The Annoyance, ComedySportz, UCB, the PIT, Just the Funny, Four Day Weekend, Florida Studio Theater, the Magnet and other comedy institutions nationwide. Adam Brooks has been instructing and accompanying musical improv for over ten years. He has served as music director for Second City Cleveland and ImprovBoston, and has worked with numerous groups from Boston, Cleveland, New York, and Chicago. He performs regularly with many ImprovBoston shows, and has developed many musicals, including the critically acclaimed What The Dickens?!? and An Evening with Ladley & Craig.

Musical Improv 201

Musical Improv 201 builds on the basics covered in 101 to explore more advanced concepts such as heightening from scene to song, musical styles and long-form musical structures. We continue to develop rhyme skills and musicianship while focusing closely on the relationship between music and character. Students will discover how to set every song up for improvisational, musical and comedic success. Prerequisite is completion of Musical Improv 101 or permission of the instructor.
