 ImprovBoston recently hit 30 years as a 501(c)3 Non-profit Theater, a Theater and Comedy School in Cambridge, MA dedicated to the art of improvisation and comedy. Over the last year the organization has been preparing for a long-awaited shift, readying itself for a major step forward as a globally recognized comedy hub, a community arts organization, a home and launching pad for Boston talent.

This Summer ImprovBoston will be interviewing and hiring a Full Time Artistic Director. We are accepting submissions from Boston and the rest of the country, looking for exceptional AD candidates who can offer the experience, dedication, and the drive to help take a comedy arts organization like ImprovBoston to the next level.

Title of the position
Artistic Director

Overall responsibility
The artistic director is responsible for implementing the artistic vision of ImprovBoston, for the Theater and Comedy School, and for major decisions regarding the ongoing professional development of artistic staff, including technicians, musicians, directors, performers and faculty, and Comedy School students.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Develop artistic quality control procedures for weekly shows

  • Oversee direction of weekly shows, auditions, festivals, special events and IB touring company

  • Maintain established Comedy School curriculum; Create standard procedure for curriculum updates that align with the development of the IB artistic vision

  • Manage relationships with nationally recognized comedy instructors; Schedule Comedy School Master Classes that provide artistic growth opportunities for IB artistic staff and students

  • Work with Managing Director to ensure that the aesthetic of IB brand marketing and the overall Theater experience aligns with the development of the IB artistic vision

  • Expand awareness of the Theater locally by creating artistic partnerships and outreach opportunities; Expand awareness nationally and internationally by overseeing IB festival shows

Reports to

  • Board of Directors, Managing Director

Term of employment

  • Full time (Salaried) $50K - $60K per year

  • Benefits negotiable; No overtime or additional pay for the first 12 months


  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

  • Exceptional organizational skills

  • Effective delegation and personnel management skills

  • 7+ years performing, teaching and directing improvisational comedy

  • 3+ years on senior artistic staff for a comedy theater or acting school with an established and comprehensive philosophy of play
