Workshop Schedule: January-March, 2008
Level I – The Fundamentals of Improvising
Level I establishes the foundation and vocabulary of ImprovBoston’s program. In the process, the five pillars of our philosophy are introduced: confidence, trust, support, risk, and fun. This level develops your confidence as you learn to recognize what is needed to begin a scene, how to recognize possibilities, and also how to play some of the short-form game structures we use in some of our shows. $195 per person. Maximum of 12 participants per class.

No previous experience necessary.

Level II – Points of Inspiration and Imagination
With your new found confidence and an introduction to ImprovBoston's principles of improvising, students develop a deeper understanding of the power of being inspired in the moment. You are introduced to the techniques that develop the playfulness of a scene, add depth to their characters, and richness to their environment. By the end of this level students will be able to implement these layering techniques in their scene work and short-form game structures. $195 per person. Maximum of 12 participants per class.

Level III – Scenes, Scenes, Scenes! The Building Blocks of Long-Form
At the beginning of this level, students will be familiar, and mostly confident with their knowledge of the tools available to them when beginning a scene. Level III explores at a deeper level the dynamics of building a scene with two or more players. It focuses on identifying and developing themes, patterns, games, story, and playfulness. It will particularly hone the ability of players to agree to be successful and play at a much more satisfying level with each other. This depth of understanding will contribute a great deal to the student’s ability to play long-form structures. $195 per person. Maximum of 12 participants per class.

Level IV – The Concepts and Language of Long-Form Improvisation
Level IV fully explores the concepts of long-form improvisation and the ImprovBoston philosophy. This level focuses on placing the players’ scene work within a larger picture, and grounding players in reliable and successful concepts that can be transferred to any long-form structure. Popular long-form structures will be touched upon but we recommend taking Elective Classes that are dedicated entirely to particular structures to gain a fuller understanding of them. $195 per person. Maximum of 12 participants per class.

Level V –Showtime!
This level asks students to make a commitment to their ensemble and to the process of developing a show for performance at the end of the session. With the assistance of their instructor and using improv-based exercises, the ensemble creates their own structure for a forty-five minute show. This is a highly creative and exhilarating process and some rehearsal time outside of scheduled classes may be encouraged. $195 per person. Maximum of 12 participants per class.

Prerequisite: Level IV
