Musical Improv 101

Musical Improv 101 will introduce students to the fundamentals of how to improvise songs that sound as if they had been written.  We will explore rhyming (and effective alternatives to rhyming), common song structures that lend themselves to improvising, creating memorable hooks, and how to convincingly get into songs from an improvised scene.  By the end of the course, students will be confidently making up well-made songs on the spot - one of the most challenging and rewarding skills in your improv arsenal!  No previous singing experience required. Completion of Improv 301 or permission from the Director of Education is required.

Musical Improv 201

Musical Improv 201 builds on the basics covered in 101 to explore more advanced concepts such as heightening from scene to song, musical styles and long-form musical structures. We continue to develop rhyme skills and musicianship while focusing closely on the relationship between music and character. Students will discover how to set every song up for improvisational, musical and comedic success. Prerequisite is completion of Musical Improv 101 or permission of the instructor.

Musical Improv 301

In this class, we build on the basics learned in 101 and the longform techniques explored in 201. We discover the art of the game-driven song. We play with the form and function of song structures in a cohesive improvised musical set. We dive into the musical extensions of IB's signature AllForm approach to improvisation. Taking the AllForm motto, "follow the fun," to the next level, we focus on the physical, emotional and vocal components of heightening paired with an ever-expanding set of musical tools to play with. 301 is all about combining two essential elements: competence and confidence.

Pre-requisites: successful completion of Music Improv 101 and 201 AND must be graduates of the complete 101-601 IBCS Improv Program (or obtain special permission from the instructor)
